According to long-standing orthodoxy in contemporary analytic philosophy of language, the content a sentence (that is, information it encodes and what one asserts when utters it) as used on particular occasion is determined by lexical meanings its parts (and syntax) extra-linguistic context use. Moving from type content, steps, we have something like: ... Step One involves syntax language generating set possible logical forms for then selecting among them unique form that context—it at this step structural ambiguities are resolved. Two semantics assigning character (a function contexts contents; see Kaplan 1989) each meaningful (this may be done conjunction with utterance, if there any polysemous expressions or free enrichment operations stage). Finally, Three, character, together context, determines context. Something like framework can frame many debates linguistics today.
